Most people think about double or triple glazing when the weather turns cold. Draughts, condensation, heating bills going up. It’s a winter conversation.
But the same glass doing that job in January is working just as hard in July, just in the opposite direction.
The heat is coming in, not just going out
Good glazing is designed to slow down heat transfer. In winter, that means keeping the warmth you’ve paid for inside the house. In summer, it does the same thing in reverse. It slows down the sun’s heat getting in. Rooms stay cooler for longer, especially through the hottest part of the afternoon.
If your windows are older, single glazed, or just past their best, you’ll feel this the other way round. Rooms that face south or west can heat up fast and stay warm well into the evening, and it’s not just uncomfortable, it puts more strain on any fans or air conditioning you’re relying on to cool things back down.
Why some rooms still overheat even with good windows
Not all glazing does the same job. Standard double glazing helps, but solar gain can still be an issue in conservatories or rooms with a lot of glass. In these cases, it’s worth asking about solar control glass. This has a coating that reflects more of the sun’s heat before it gets through. It doesn’t make the room darker or change how the glass looks.
Ventilation matters just as much as the glass itself. Trickle vents, opening lights, and the position of your windows all affect how well a room can cool itself down once the sun moves round. A well specified window isn’t just about the glass, it’s about how the whole unit is designed to work together.
The bigger picture
Energy efficiency isn’t a seasonal thing. It’s a year round job. A good installation should be doing quiet, constant work whether it’s freezing or thirty degrees outside. If you’re only thinking about your windows in terms of keeping heat in, you’re only getting half the value out of them.
