Autumn seems to have come about overnight, with plenty of rainy days and cold weather coming in the forecast. If you’re not in the market for replacing your windows this year, make sure to take extra care to prolong their lifespan so they last through the autumn and winter months.
If you don’t know where to start, don’t worry! We’ve put together a quick, handy guide to help you out.
1. Inspect your windows
Although this blog is focusing on tips and tricks to prepare your windows for the cold, it is important to note that these steps won’t work if your windows are in poor condition.
Look at your windows and check for:
- Cracks in the glass
- Warping, rot or mould on the window frames
- Any gaps
- Locks and handles
Damage in windows is difficult to repair, and will only be exacerbated during winter. To save you from bigger issues down the line, consider replacing your windows for the sake of your comfort and heating bills this year.
2. Seal any draughts
Do you feel the cold coming through your windows every year, or maybe you wonder why your heating bill is so high when your house stays chilly? Draughts through your windows could be the culprit.
Gaps and cracks in your windows may seem like minor issues, but they can have a big impact on heat loss in your home. Luckily, resealing your frames with caulk is a quick and easy fix.
Caulk is inexpensive whilst effective at getting the job done, and can be peeled away during the warmer months if necessary.
3. Clean your windows properly
It may seem like an obvious tip, but many of us don’t clean our windows as often or as thoroughly as we should. Condensation and dirt can build up on our windows, tainting the appearance at best, and causing mould at worst.
You don’t need to be a professional to clean them properly – use a mild soap or window cleaner. Make sure not to neglect the exterior of your windows, too.
4. Double-check handles and locks
Unfortunately, burglaries don’t disappear during autumn and winter. A loose for handle or old locks can be just what thieves are looking for to get into your home. Checking your locks are working is incredibly quick, but can save you a lot of hassle down the line.
If your locks or handles aren’t as secure as you’d like them to be, it may be a sign you need to replace your doors.
5. Watch out for condensation
Having condensation on windows is an incredibly common occurrence as the temperature outside drops, but the temperature inside our homes rises. However, this can turn into an issue when the excess moisture causes mould.
To prevent this from happening, consider using a dehumidifier in any areas that are prone to excess moisture. Ventilating your home regularly also allows the moisture to escape before causing any issues.
