Preparing your windows for the winter could help reduce your energy bills. 18% of heat loss occurs through windows so we understand how important it is that windows are energy efficient. Although no house is 100% energy efficient, there are ways you can reduce heat loss through windows.
Double Glazing
In the UK, around 7% of houses still have single glazing which loses heat twice as fast as through standard double glazing. If you do have single glazing, upgrading to A+ energy rating double glazing could create a saving of over £120 a year.
Secondary Glazing
Secondary glazing is when another pane of glass is added to an existing pane. The performance is not as good as with a proper double-glazed unit, but it is a cheaper option. This change will still save energy and reduce heat loss to some extent.
Window Dressings
Making sure your windows are dressed with energy efficiency in mind will help reduce heat loss. Curtains and blinds that have thermal linings added will help, but you can also get plain thermal liners and add them to your existing curtains and blinds. Consider doubling up, if you only have a blind, add curtains and vice versa. Make sure your curtains are fitted well and aren’t hanging too far away from the window to reduce draughts. Close curtains as soon as it starts to cool down but keep them open when it is sunny to warm the room up.
Keep Windows In Good Condition
It is advised to check your windows regularly for maintenance and repairs but it is particularly important on the approach to winter. Look for cracks, peeling sealant or moisture getting through during the autumn. You can then try to get them fixed before the coldest part of the year arrives.
Plug Up Gaps
Have you noticed gaps in the sealant or draughts coming through holes around your windows? You can seal them using products you can get a local hardware shop. Caulk, insulation foam and foam rubber weather strips are all viable options for adding a layer of draught exclusion.
Replacing old or broken windows, with highly rated, energy efficient windows will not only reduce heat loss. They also reduce noise pollution and make your house more secure.
